JARAWAS
Guardians of the Andamans
The Jarawas are one of the Negro tribes living in the tropical island of Andaman. They lead an extremely primitive hunter-gatherer way of life which is threatened by modern agriculture and industry. The Jarawas are one of 7 tribes around the world who still successfully maintain this lifestyle. After Indian independence in 1956 a regulation was passed protecting the tribes of Andaman and preserving areas for them to continue their nomadic hunter-gatherer lifestyle.
