JARAWAS

Social Structure

The word tribe is used to group people with identical socio-cultural and physical characters and who have a common territory, language, customs and rights over natural resources. The Jarawa tribe has divided their territory into three broad divisions- the southern “Boiab” region, the middle “Thidong” region and the Northern “Tanmad” region.

The Jarawas live in these territorial groups without any form of central leadership.  Within each territorial group there are various local groups. It consists of several families and some dormitories. There are usually 2-5 kin groups within a local group. (Kin groups are people related by blood or marriage). These groups are not permanent and may keep changing depending on occasion and season. The family group is the basic structural and functional unit and is of the nuclear type.
